About me

I'm a National Teaching Fellow and Associate Professor at De Montfort University, Leicester (UK). I feel so lucky and privileged to not only have my dream job of teaching at a fantastic university, but also to be involved in so many exciting projects with so many amazing people.

My teaching career started off as a Chemistry teacher at Ripon Grammar School. As an NQT I was not the world's greatest teacher, but I learned so much from the most wonderful staff and students there. With a full teaching toolbox, I made the difficult decision to leave my amazing teaching job and return to academia with the ambition of wanting to improve teaching and learning in universities. I started my first lecturing job at DMU in 2014 and have been extremely fortunate to have lots of support from some amazing people to become one of the youngest NTFs in 2018.

Biochemistry is my subject discipline and I love teaching our excellent Biomedical Science, Medical Science and Nutrition students. Particular pedagogic interests of mine include UDL, inclusion, co-creation, game-based learning, transitions, ASD and learning differences, personal tutoring at university, student voice, team-based learning... and more recently I'm really getting into remote teaching, learning and student support.

Beyond my subject area, I have a great interest in staff training and development. I co-created DMU's new Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning Higher Education (PGCLTHE) several years ago with Kevin Merry and Alan Mortiboys. This led onto me creating several development sessions for DMU called "Golden Ideas For..." teaching and learning, assessment and feedback.

It's impossible to name here everybody who has helped me, mentored me, inspired me and encouraged me to try to become a better teacher every year. I am truly grateful to all of my students, past and present, and to my amazing colleagues.
